The Marysville President’s lunch

On Sunday I was guest of honour at the president’s lunch at the Marysville v North Croydon
Superules match. I am a club sponsor and MDFNC member no. 0626.
A little while back I was asked to create their new Villains mascot which you can see in the photo with Sam and his mate Michael who came up for the game.
The town is back on it’s feet and ready to roar and the ground is really beautiful at the foot of the black spur surrounded by gum and cloud covered hills.
The battle was willing, a true Superules game, hard clashing of soft bodies. A grunting, seething battle played at break-back speed.
Plenty of beer was consumed during (spectators and maybe one or two players) and after game (spectators and all players).
They wanted to know if I’d have a run with them but I explained if they’d seen my 3 fresh-air kicks in the last game they wouldn’t be asking.
Marysville was smashed by North Croydon – a team made up of hard, old coppers, apparently, but Marysville didn’t mind too much as they are just getting the team back on track as people are rebuilding and moving back into town.
There was a fear that Marysville would end up a ghost town but the bloke with the mutton chops (Norm) told me they owed it to the 34 lost or broken families that this never happen.
I didn’t see as much as the game as I would have liked as I was busy caricaturing some of the legends of Marysville – pics attached. (Some heads just made for caricature as you can see!)
It was really humbling to speak with some of these blokes about the hell they have been through and the mates lost.
(The bloke with the Kelly beard was one of the real heroes of the fire but I didn’t hear it from him – he was a nice humble bloke with a magical mullet. I drew him with ember burn in his beard and thank god he thought it was funny.)
I’d always wanted to have a look around Marysville but always felt it was a bit ghoulish and talking to the locals this is a real problem for a tourist town. They need people to come and spend some dollars.
I have never been to Marysville before but I will be back. It’s a sometimes beautiful drive and Marysville is breathtaking.

In the background of the sign photo there is an old toilet block with a large white ‘Beatle’ painted on it. It survived the fires and legend has it that over the years various councils have removed the tribute to the legendary band, only to have it, mysteriously, return in all it’s glory. This has been going on since the 60′s. I think they’ve decided to leave it!
